Steve at the Fillmore
June 2, 2016
Seasick Steve: Ramblin' Man is published today. Over the next week or so I'll be posting some little teasers about some of the turning points in Steve's life. My admiration for Steve as a musician only grew as I researched his life, but there are many features of his official bio that have to be revised, sometimes shockingly so.
I'm saving the juiciest bits for now. But this article tells us something intriguing about what Steve got up to during the Summer of Love. Since he broke through in 2006, he's usually said that he only dropped in and out of San Francisco in the mid and late Sixties. But before it was a different story.
There's a treasure-trove of news about Steve in the Norwegian press, covering the period 2000-2006. This is what he told Knut H Slettemo of regional newspaper Telen in November 2000, before he moved to Notodden in 2001:
I was at the Fillmore and saw bands playing almost daily. Here was the local band The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Janis Joplin etc.. In '67 hitchhiked I like to Monterey Pop Festival and saw the gig where Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar. Only in retrospect, did I realise how lucky I was that to see all of this.
It's in Norwegian, but just click Google Translate. More soon.
