Seasick Steve – Wold or Leach?
June 3, 2016
We all know his name is Steve Wold, right? When I started researching Steve's past career using the name 'Wold', I quickly ran into the sand. But with a little more digging, a past identity, as Steve Leach, presented itself. And with research into Steve Leach's career, a whole lot of doors opened up...
You don't even need to go that far back. Until the early 2000s, Steve was open about his past name. He mentions it in this piece, published in Norwegian daily Dagbladet in September 2002.
There's a cheeky Yahoo Answers post about his change of name (which occurred when he married in 1982: 'Wold' is his second wife's surname). A certain Tennessee paramedic called Joe, who worked with Steve on the ambulances, responded to a query about Steve's name to say:
"Steve was a very talented musician and one day one of the guys at work stumbled onto seasick Steve on the internet and recognized him as Steven Leach even after the fact that it had been over 20 years since we had seen him. His name change was new to us as well as his biography posted on the internet. He was a good paramedic and had no tales of traveling around homeless. I believe in his talent as I witnessed it and love him for that. I was not aware that he needed to change his name as his life was very normal from what we saw of him. This has been a mystery to us."
I did contact a Tennessee paramedics' association, but Joe was a mystery to them. Joe, if you're out there, love to hear from you!
